The Joy of Summer

I am a hap-hap-happy woman today.

Last night I tasted the most delicious summery cocktail ever on a girls' night out at a friend's place. Have you ever tried a Japanese Slipper? It is green and citrussy and delectable and perfect for a hot, humid night. Here's the recipe:

Japanese Slipper

1 part Midori
1 part Cointreau
1 part lemon juice

Mix and chill (and enjoy)

That's it. Mmmmmm.

Even better, yesterday we got lots of rain, and there will be more tonight. Hip, hip hooray!
Perhaps our eleven years of drought is ending. We have had a couple of good falls in the past month, just enough to keep everything going. The garden is leaping around saying "thank you, thank you", or so it seems.

According to the weather report, last night Melbourne city (about 10 km away) had 10 mm of rain, but we had over an inch and a half. How do I know? I used a very sensitive and technologically-advanced rain gauge; I stuck a straight sided saucepan outside and measured how far it filled up.

As you can see, the pumpkins are getting excited, and soon they will take over the lawn.

Everything looks new, fresh and green, so unlike midsummer in previous years.

I think sometimes we have to go without something to truly appreciate it. I will never, ever undervalue the wonder of rain for the rest of my life.

I love your Christmasy header. :) And I bet there's not a bartender around here that knows how to make that drink,(although it does sound yummy)..... but then you are talking to someone who just discovered there was such a thing as a chocolate martini.....

lord have mercy. ;-)

How nice to hear of a cocktail reminiscent of 1940's glamour.

I'd be too embarassed to ask for by name some of the cocktails I've heard of lately!

Your garden is looking gorgeous.

I love seeing photos of your vegie garden. Mind didn't get planted til the week after Cup Day, so it's looking a little less exuberant! Isn't the rain FANTASTIC though!!!! I was in Rowville yesterday when that storm hit just after 4pm. Wowee...I'm so glad I was able to go home after it finished!

I can completely relate to the feeling of pining for rain and then getting it! Isn't it just wonderful? We don't get summer rain here hardly ever so the rains of the winter are soooo welcome when they come. Your scarlet runner beans are gorgeous, by the way. Cindy at Rosehaven Cottage

How funny!!! Yippee it's raining? I suppose if we ever had a drought (ha, not gonna happen) I'd say yippee too, but as it is, it is cold rainy and the steps were icy tonight (I slipped twice...didn't learn the first time)...I'd like some snow, but I'm really tired of rain, especially in December..but all complaining aside, I love your garden!

Your garden is looking wonderful. We had plenty of rain here in Adelaide today, sad to see so much of it going down the street drains and straight out to sea. If only "they" would build storm water catchments and supply pipes, we'd have enough water for the city's gardens. Those with rainwater tanks will be grateful, but those of us without have to make do with what we catch in our open wheelie bins. I walked home in the rain today and happily sloshed through the puddles, it was the only way really, the streets were awash, my work shoes will take days to dry out, but I felt just like a big kid, turning my face up and catching rain on my tongue.........

Everything looks beautiful! and I'm a bit envious...it's bare and stark wintertime here. ;) Your garden really is very lovely! I have the same method of using a raingauge, too!

You asked about the white cookies on my post...those are just the ritz cracker-peanut butter sandwiches (you make those first), then dipped in melted white chocolate bark...they are *that* easy, and really yummy!

Merry Christmas!!

Your garden pictures are so refreshing after the drizzly gloom we've been having here in the northern hemisphere.
