As the days grow shorter and colder, it is easy to feel as dreary inside as the weather outside. Here in the Southern Hemisphere we don't have Christmas, New Year's Day or St Valentine's Day to bring cheer and happiness to the colder months. On such wintry days, lighting a scented candle (or two ... or three) can make all the difference, turning gloomy into warm and inviting. Add a steaming cup of soup or hot chocolate and a flickering fire, and wintry weather can become a real celebration.
What do you do to cheer yourself up when the weather is cold and grey?

This post makes me feel like doing exactly that, curling up by the fire with a hot drink! The candles help too, I do that as well. The other things to do in winter are, wear big jumpers and scarves, cuddle up under blankets on the couch, wear ugg boots (I'm doing that right now), have a roast dinner (we are having one in about an hour), have the clothes drier on, have a radiator at the end of the bed at night, lay a polar fleece blanket over the bottom sheet on the bed at night, and have warm apple crumble after dinner. Aah...very indulgent! Wendy xx
I stoke the fire, select a good book off the shelf, and sit in my favourite comfy armchair and listen to the wind and rain outside.

Wendy, your suggestions sound just wonderful! I love the idea of putting a polar fleece blanket over the bottom sheet.
Sorcha,I also love to read a good book by the fire. Thanks!

I cook comfort food, like tonight's soup followed by Christmas pud (left over from a Christmas-in-July event we went to yesterday) and custard. I've done quite a bit of baking, too.
Make tea and grab a blanket with a good book..Lighting candles is so wonderful.
I often forget that the southern Hemph is turning colder during this time of the year. I am glad that I found your blog so that when it is your summer time weather I can be jealous when we have snow falling. I will try and remember this idea and the others shared.
I rug up under a knee sized quilt or blanket with a good book or a movie, a cup of tea and maybe a few pieces of really good chocolate on special occasions.
We tend not to use the room with the fireplace all that much, so the ducted heating is always going when we're home. That with nice warm socks to keep the toes warm and some little warm bodies (or not so little in our case LOL) to snuggle with and that's a wintry night.
I couldn't agree more! And even though we are in the midst of "summer" (which in North Country is only about 70 degrees Farenheit) I still love to light a candle. :) Be sure to stop by my blog!
I love lighting candles too! Turning on some nice music, snuggling up with some yummy coffee.
When we lived in IL and the winters got cold.....and darker so much earlier..... would try and spend at least 15 minutes out each day.....
also, coffee and friends helped :)
As soon as the weather starts to turn in September, I find my scented candles come out of hiding. I always burn vanilla and cinnamon. Somehow those smells just perk up a dreary house :0)
I bake. Gather up the children, make loaves of bread or scones. A big pot of minestrone soup and we all grab a reading book and throw ourselves aimlessly around the living room, in a totally unarranged manner...drinking in the cold days of New England.
