Moving Tip # 4: Label Everything Clearly

This tip is short and sweet. Many guides to moving house will suggest that you write on each box what room you want it to go to.

My tip: Also write on each box what is in it, in detail if necessary. It will take a little extra time but can save a lot of time in the end. Such as when a young child suddenly decides he needs a special toy. Now. Or you need to find where you packed the can opener.

My tip--tape colored post-it notes or construction paper to each box--different color for each room. On moving day, tape corresponding color pages to the doorways of each room. That makes it easier and quicker to unload boxes into the right rooms. You still might have to move things around slightly, but with a glance you can see which box goes to which room.

I always started out writing what's in each box, but as the time got shorter, and the boxes scarcer, I gave it up and stuck with the color system.

If your moving boxes will be away from you for a long time (like when we moved from the UK to Australia - 6 months) dont label everything clearly... all the boxes I had marked 'DVDs' had been looked through and the DVDs of choice taken out of their boxes, the disc was nice any easy for the thief to slip into a pocket!

Yep.

We're moving right now (yay!) and I will be doing this, after having several unidentified box problems last move.
