Built into the bluestone foundations of the house, the cellar is several degrees cooler than the rest of the house - essential for keeping perishable food cool in the days before refrigeration.
Most people in Adelaide with old houses like this one use their cellars to store wine. I think it would be wonderful for storing preserves, but at the moment it is storing odds and ends that have no other 'home'. Two of my children think the cellar should be a clubhouse for them to play in.
Have you ever had a house with a cellar? What did you use it for?

we had a cellar in our house in the uk, we converted it into a cinema room, it was fabulous!
I have a 'dungeon'. You can't access it from inside the house though. I affectionately call it the dungeon because it's dark, cool and just a tad creepy. Dh calls it the shed, and perhaps that is more appropriate, as that's what we use it for.
I think dungeon sounds more dramatic though!
What a magical little walk down to the cellar. I love the red colored steps. I grew up with a cellar. I wish it had held bottles of wine. Insted it held things that didn't fit in elsewhere. My young neices and nephews delighted in playing in this space. I think a playroom would be fun!
Enjoy your new place.
Blessings and hugs,

I live in Pennsylvania and almost all houses here have basements. We don't call them cellars.
Coming from England I thought this was most unusual as I was only used to Victorian houses having cellars in England.
Some are left very basic and others are done up and made into an extra room. Ours has the old walls painted white. Down there is the furnace, washer and dryer.
I have shelving down there that I use as extra pantry space and for my chutneys and jams.
Basements are a great to have.
I love your little stairs down.

Ooooooo, nice!
My ex's great-grandmother turned her house into a private girls school (Central Vic) and actually put several of the girls to sleep in the cellar under the house until she covered in some of the verandahs lol.
I've lived in a few houses with cellars and they were always dark, tiny spooky places!!
We had a larger basement several times as well, and I didn't like them either. Our bedrooms were usually located there, and they were just kind of creepy!
when I was in the states on exchange we had a basement, it was huge and my host father ran a business out of it. Always loved the idea, I have some friends locally (sth coast NSW) who have space under their house where they store their preserves. It doesn't have a lovely staircase hinting of years gone past though.
I love the cellar! It would be a great place to store potatoes and apples and other produce. Also a good place to go if there was a bad storm. I grew up with a basement. It was very large, but I like the idea of a smaller area like this one, less area to keep up.
I love your cellar! My Grandmother did and it was a fantastic clubhouse! : )
It would make a pretty sweet wine cellar, even if someone does not driunk wine, the ambiamce of one is amazing!
Love,
Sue
I am soooo envious of that cellar! That will come in so handy indeed!
We lived in the midwest growing up and everyone had cellars because of tornadoes. Ours was used to store items and my dad was a taxidermist and that's where he did his work. We also had baby chickens down there sometimes. My grandma's cellar was a fun play are with a pool table, rocking horse, an old cash register and just other neat things. We were all afraid to go down to my great grandma's cellar (we were convinced it was haunted.) It's funny now to think of how everyone's cellars were so different and stored different things.
