Underplanting With Herbs

A great way to save money in the kitchen is to grow your own herbs. They are so very expensive at the supermarket, yet can be grown easily at home. Many even thrive in poor soils.

This weekend I bought some pots of herbs which I have planted underneath the roses growing near our back door. They will be conveniently close to the kitchen for picking at mealtimes and will also provide ground cover thus reducing weed growth in those garden beds.

mint

So far I have planted sweet basil, thyme, oregano, sage, coriander, mint, rocket (arugula) and Italian parsley. We already have two large rosemary bushes. The basil will die off over winter but the rest should survive, although the coriander will go to seed next spring.

We have very mild winters so most herbs will do well year-round. However, if you live in a climate with harsher winters you may do better growing herbs in pots.

Do you grow herbs? Which are your favourite herbs for growing at home?

We grow a lot of our own herbs - I can't remember the last time I bought any.

Now it's getting cold, we're putting them, and the potted lettuce, in the propagation houses, where the frost won't get them. We haven't had frost yet, but we figured we'd beat it!

That way, we can continue to have fresh herbs and free lettuce all through winter, when bagged lettuce prices here in Dunedin go skyrocketing.

Our tomatoes in the propagation house and on the deck are still bearing well too - got four big, ripe, juicy tomatoes out of the prop house today. Yummy!

No herbs in at the moment but I asked hubby this weekend to look into getting some basil. I want it to make pesto with.

We just put in our garden today and I am growing curly and flat leaf parsley, thyme, chives, lavender, cilantro, oregano, dill and basil. Herbs are very expensive to buy here as well.
Love your new house!

I like growing herbs. The other day I went out to spray the weeds where my garden will be and accidentally sprayed some mint that I had planted. how sad!!! Now it will die! I'll have to buy more.

Your basil is looking great!

I have chives, rosemary, flat-leaf parsley growing and bought basil to plant. We'll see how it goes!

Mmmm... I love sweet basil! What a great idea to plant them under your roses. Our spring is just getting started here, so I have been trying to get our gardens planted. I have tarragon, parsley, cilantro, and lemon thyme growing right now.

It sounds as iff you are settling in nicely. You must be thrilled!

Have a great week,
Jennifer

You need to add some dill, chervil and tarragon :-) I love herbs and am just (mentally) working on a new herb bed for colour as well as culinary use.

I have to agree with Stephanie,

Mint is one of the herbs that I only grow in a pot. I have seen more than one herb bed turn into a mint bed once it has been established for a few years.

On my favourites I find fresh rosemary and thyme something I just can't go past.

Kind Regards
Belinda

We had a nice herb garden at our old house and I loved the mint, basil and coriander. Hoping to plant a bigger one this year and try some drying, as well.
