Popcorn: A Cheap and Delicious Snack

On a cold day, popcorn is the perfect afternoon snack. We cook ours the old-fashioned way, in a saucepan, which makes it a very economical snack too.

Just heat a little oil and butter in a large saucepan and add a pinch of salt.  Put in one kernel of corn and when it starts to dance and sizzle add in the rest.  Half a cup of kernels will feed a crowd.  Put the lid on tight and shake the pan over the heat until the popping finishes.  Add extra salt if you like and serve.

I think popcorn is at its best this way: hot, salty, buttery and fresh.

How do you like your popcorn?

I love popcorn anytime! A little salt and butter will do.

We also love savoury popcorn made the old-fashioned way. A good shake of mexican smoked salt and a squeeze of lime juice adds a delicious tang to our favourite snack!

We dust ours with icing sugar and I have just come across a 'recipe' and they added finely chopped dried apricots and dried apples to the bowl. Haven't tried that yet.

Popcorn is one thing I always keep in the pantry. Like you say, it's cheap, relatively healthy and a little goes a long way.

Dh bought me a popcorn machine thingy. I don't like it that much, because the salt won't stick to it. I also don't like the modern microwave popcorn packets. Old fashioned is the best.
