Edible Garden: January 2011

It's past my bedtime but I'm up blogging because it's too hot to sleep.

Today I thought I'd share some pictures of my food garden.  None of the fruit trees are producing at the moment (mostly because they are new trees) but the vegie patch and herbs are doing well, despite the hot, dry weather, and two weeks of neglect while we were away in Sydney

So here are some of the things you will find if you walk around my garden.

onions ready for lifting
bergamot in full flower
nasturtiums
yellow button or pattypan squash
dill
silverbeet (Swiss chard)
tomatoes
sweetcorn

What do you grow in your garden?

At the moment nothing, but usually we have a large & productive garden. There is still a bit of sad rotting silverbeet & some shallots. All the ground is rotting with all this rain & we still have water past my ankles in the backyard. We have just had another 10.4inches in the last 31hrs.

Hi There, :) I just love your blog! It is so homely, and lovely to visit. :) Your garden is amazing! Wish i had the space to do that, too. :) How do you even grow such great looking vegetables! Did you teach yourself? :) I would love to learn. :) I live near Canberra. :) Nice to meet you, and would love to get to know you better!

Hi Kimmie, Caroline and Melissa,

Thanks for your sweet comments.

Caroline, I am so sorry that your garden is being destroyed by rain. My heart goes out to every up north suffering from the floods.

Melissa,
Thanks for stopping by. To answer your questions, I don't have a huge backyard (half of it is unfortunately taken up by the garage), but I am growing herbs and vegies in every spare corner. I only photograph the healthy looking vegies - there are plenty that are suffering from heat stress at the moment that I'm not showing here - we're pretty desperate for some rain. I taught myself to grow vegies at our house in Melbourne. I'd love to get to know you better too.

hugs,

Kate

Your garden is looking very healthy and productive Kate. Love the photo of the Bergamot, i have been trying to find one for awhile, will have to look harder. How do you use the dill? I hope you get some rain soon. We had two very much needed thunderstorms last week which gave us a beautiful 22ml. We have had temps in the 40C's since, so like we never even had the rain. But we have nothing to complain about compared to what Queensland is going through.

Hi Sharon,

I was hoping to use the dill to make dill pickles, however, there haven't been many cucumbers to harvest so far! I also sometimes use it with salmon. Fortunately (and quite unusually for Adelaide), I don't think we've had any days that have hit 40 yet this summer. We're expecting some rain later this week (fingers crossed).

Ah, when I need a taste of summer weather I visit your lovely blog. We are in the midst of a cold, New England Winter. Snowfall is expected tomorrow (again). I'm sitting in front of our fireplace and can imagine you sipping iced tea or something like that.
I love your garden. It looks lush and delicious.
Wishing you happiness in abundance.

Even if they weren´t edible, the plants would be worth growing them as they are really pretty.
