Time to Buy a Bike?

I have never been much of a bike rider.  I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was 12.  However, now I am thinking of buying myself a bike.

The catalyst?  I have just been offered a new job that is only a short bike ride - about fifteen minutes - away, although it would be a fifty minute walk.  Most of that distance is through back streets and parkland, so there are few busy roads to brave.

I love the look of some of the retro cruiser bikes that are currently on the market, such as the Apollo Cruiser below.   They appeal in so many ways: only three gears, comfy seat, cute basket up the front, skirt-friendly.

Lycra is not my thing; I just want a simple bike that will take me from A to B without too much drama and with a reasonable amount of comfort.

Are you a cyclist?  What kind of bike do you ride?  Do you know anything about cruiser bikes?

I bought a mountain bike last year for a similar reason. I had it fitted with a bag rest thing on the back as the mountain bike won't fit a basket - then started seeing the cruisers and wish I had one. I think for what you're describing you'd be really happy with it.

Hi Kate,

the bike looks lovely-I recently bought a new bike and chose a retro look one-have a look at the Trek Alliant -they have a ladies model and has a few more gears. Bicycle Express on Halifax street sells them. Mone looks very similar to the one in your picture

I ride a bike everywhere -
Adelaide is actually a pretty
good city for cycling, especially
where you live since it's near
the river. I have a Giant Elwood
hybrid which unfortunately isn't
made anymore. I thought of
getting a retro style bike but
they've become little too
trendy!

I don't know much a bout bikes, but a basket is a must,(carrying flowers, fruit or warm just out of the oven goods wrapped in a pretty tea towel) and in summer a pretty floral dress and hat (shame about helmets), and that would be just perfect (oh a nice vintagey pink or white bike would be good too).
Congrats on the job.

Cheers,
Lisa x

Thanks for these tips and suggestions. You all get the look I'm going for - cute and not too athletic, LOL! Paddysmum, I'll look into Bicycle Express- thanks!

I'm not a bike rider. Last Easter was my first ride in about 20 years, or more.

Having said that, I have it on good authority that those cruiser models are very much more comfortable than a regular bike. And I think for non-bike riders or those who are not nuts about riding, it would be a good fit. Certainly, the cruiser is what this non bike-rider would go for before some slick-looking modern thing.

Tell us about the new job you've been offered!!!

I love to ride my bike. It makes me feel so free and I enjoy the outdoors so much when I'm cruising along with the wind and sun on my face. I think you will love riding. It's great exercise too!

I love my Trek low-step. I even have a basket, and tow a built for two bike trailer (we have four kids, two ride their own two-wheelers and twinswho ride in the trailer). The seat is wide and the bike fits comfortably. But ultimately you will want to ridea few you like because sometimes theyfitand sometimes they feel a little awkward to ride. But the cruisers I tried mademe remember what it felt like to be a kids riding her bike without a care I
In the world. Enjoy bike hunting!
